All Aboriginal life was told by the Great Spirit Ancestors of dreamtime. ‘Dreamtime’ contained all life including humans, flora, fauna, and the land which were all part of a vast unchanging network of relationships. Indigenous Dreamtime stories were passed down through generations containing necessary information about material use, medicines and food sources, each including important information about the life of Aboriginal people. In contrast, current and modern methods have continued to develop and thrive. Different methods of living have helped people live easier and better lives within large communities. Indigenous methods are just as effective are current methods today. Some people believe that Indigenous methods are more effective than the current techniques. Indigenous stories have a variety of differences that impact there usage today which are described below...
Material Use
Indigenous Material Usage includes the vast diversity of flora and fauna that were utilised into Aboriginals everyday life. These were used for materials such as:
Medicines
Bush medicines are very brief compared to the wide variety of medication supplied for people today. Bush medicines come from plants which have not been scientifically tested to show the impacts and side effects of the treatment. Some people believe that Aboriginal remedies are stronger than current methods. This may be true but to ensure all people within societies are supplied with theses medicines, there must be a larger resource. Bush medicines fail to do this. Bush medicines are also very risky as they were tested by trial and error and Indigenous people are still unaware of the full side effects that these plants have on people today.
Food Sources
Bush tucker is very plain and simple compared to the extravagant variety of foods supplies to people today. Bush tucker mainly consisted of staples, some fruits, nuts, fish, etc. Majority of bush tucker goes through long processes to ensure the foods are edible. Compared to everyday life today, most foods are already prepared and ready to eat. Bush tucker would require a lot more effort and would mean smaller supplies and assortments of food.
